Radiative diffusion in stellar atmospheres : diffusion velocities

چکیده
Aims. The present paper addresses some of the problems in the buildup of element stratification in stellar magnetic atmospheres due to microscopic diffusion, in particular the redistribution of momentum among the various ionisation stages of a given element and the calculation of diffusion velocities in the presence of inclined magnetic fields. Methods. We have considerably modified and extended our CARAT code to provide radiative accelerations, not only from bound-bound but also from bound-free transitions. In addition, our code now computes ionisation and recombination rates, both radiative and collisional. These rates are used in calculating the redistribution of momentum among the various ionisation stages of the chemical elements. A careful comparison shows that the two different theoretical approaches to redistribution that are presently available lead to widely discrepant results for some chemical elements, especially in the magnetic case. In the absence of a fully satisfactory theory of redistribution, we propose to use the geometrical mean of the radiative accelerations from both methods. Results. Diffusion velocities have been calculated for 28 chemical elements in a T eff = 12000 K, log g = 4.00 stellar magnetic atmosphere with solar abundances. Velocities and resulting element fluxes in magnetic fields are discussed; rates of abundance changes are analysed for systematic trends with field strength and field direction. Special consideration is given to the Si case and our results are confronted in detail with well-known results derived more than two decades ago.

Modelling of mercury isotope separation in CP stellar atmospheres: results and problems
Formation of anomalous isotope abundances in the atmospheres of chemically peculiar (CP) stars can be explained by light-induced drift (LID). This effect is additional to the radiative acceleration and appears due to systematic asymmetry of radiative flux in partly overlapping isotopic spectral line profiles. LID causes levitation of an isotope with a red-shifted spectral line and sinking of an...
متن کاملEddington Limit and Radiative Transfer in Highly Inhomogeneous Atmospheres
Radiation dominated accretion disks are likely to be subject to the “photon bubble” instability, which may lead to strong density inhomogeneities on scales much shorter than the disk scale height. Such disks – and magnetized, radiation-dominated atmospheres in general – could radiate well above the Eddington limit without being disrupted. When density contrasts become large over distances of or...
متن کاملAn efficient diffusion approximation for 3D radiative transfer parameterization: application to cloudy atmospheres
The three-dimensional (3D) diffusion radiative transfer equation, which utilizes a four-term spherical harmonics expansion for the scattering phase function and intensity, has been efficiently solved by using the full multigrid numerical method. This approach can simulate the transfer of solar and thermal infrared radiation in inhomogeneous cloudy conditions with different boundary conditions a...
متن کاملAsteroseismic signatures of helium gradients in late F-type stars
Element diffusion is expected to occur in all kinds of stars : according to the relative effect of gravitation and radiative acceleration, they can fall or be pushed up in the atmospheres. Helium sinks in all cases, thereby creating a gradient at the bottom of the convective zones. This can have important consequences for the sound velocity, as has been proved in the sun with helioseismology.

We present a homogeneous photometric and spectroscopic analysis of 18 stars along the evolutionary sequence of the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 ([Fe/H]≈−2), from the main-sequence turnoff point to red giants below the bump. The spectroscopic stellar parameters, in particular stellarparameter differences between groups of stars, are in good agreement with broad-band and Strömgren photome...
